The Small Munsterlander breed was created in the Munster region of Germany around 1900 as a result of a desire for a small hunting dog capable of locating and pointing birds, furbearers, and large game, and assisting in game recovery by tracking and, whenever possible, retrieving the game to the hunter. They were imported to the United States in the mid 1970’s and have been a less common versatile breed with a cult following.

Small Munsterlanders are cooperative dogs that seek to please. They are active, driven dogs that require daily mental and physical exercise. They have tremendous drive in the field, and once they are through the “puppy” stage they develop a great “off button” with minimal training.

Males stand between 20.5 and 22 at the shoulders, females range from 20 to 21 inches. Typical weight ranges are 45-55 lbs for males and 40-50 lbs for females.

Their coat is dense, medium length, straight or slightly wavy, close lying and water repellent. It provides ample protection from the elements as well as burrs and briars. Their color is brown and white, or roan.

Small Munsterlanders are cooperative hunters. They may develop a medium to long range as confidence develops, but they will check in often with their handler. They are intelligent, capable of learning and have an even, steady temperament. In training it is important to teach them first. Heavy handed, overly aversive training is not advised for this breed. These dogs excel with positive reinforcement training.

Gallant Gun Dogs Small Munsterlanders are hunting dogs first and foremost, and for that reason are not likely to be paired to non-hunting households.  Homes with a large, fenced yard or larger properties are preferred. Pick order for litters will be set based on the following criteria:

a litter

skeet v. rasko

Int CH Brushdale’s Quismat was bred to Rasko vom Schützenknapp on September 12, 2024. Puppies are expected to whelp approximately November 12, 2024 and will go to their hunting homes in mid January. We expect the majority of dogs to be brown and white with beautiful, full capes. Both males and females should be average size for a Small Munsterlander. Since both sire and dam are exceptionally healthy dogs we expect these offspring to hunt hard and live long lives. Puppies will be $2000 with a $1000 deposit due when they are whelped. Each of these puppies will be prioritized to hunting homes and will come microchipped, registered, genetically tested, and with a two year guarantee against genetic health defects.

Skeet

Skeet is a small but mighty female who conforms very well. She is fearless in the field and well mannered in the home. She is comfortable hunting close when reigned in but will venture out to find game when her handler lets her. She checks in often; there’s little to no worry about losing her in the field.

She has tested in NAVHDA (NA 112 Pr 1), earned the International Champion conformation title in the IABCA, and has successfully hunted ten species of upland birds, migratory birds, and furred game in seven states prior to age three.

Skeet is genetically clear with the exception of an increased ALT activity, which is very common in Small Munsterlanders and is not symptomatic. Her hips are OFA “EXCELLENT.”

rasko

Rasko is a German import Kleine Munsterlander from Haus Im Wald Kennel in Virginia. Rasko is a slightly above average size brown and white male with beautiful large brown mantles making him appear to be mostly caped. He is a bold and skillful but obedient hunter and an all around happy dog.

He has tested in NAVHDA (NA 110 Pr 1, UT 204 Pr 1), JGHV (HZP 180, VJP 68), and AKC (Senior Hunter Upland, Junior Hunter Retriever, Canine Good Citizen). He has hunted upland game, small furred game and waterfowl in thirteen states!

Just like Skeet, Rasko is genetically clear with the exception of increased ALT activity, and his PennHip measurements are 0.17 on both sides!
